ABOUT OUR AUTHOR-
JENNIFER CROSS: Jennifer wrote her first play when she was sixteen for
a Sunday school performance. Following its success, she wrote the next
year’s one too. However, it wasn’t until 2003 that
she returned to playwriting. Challenging herself to see if she could
write a musical comedy for child performers, her first mainstream play
was born. Armed with the script in hand, an appointment was made with
the Headteacher of a local school to which she had links through her
main job as a Nanny. With negotiations complete, a drama club was soon
set up at the school. Spearheaded by Jennifer as the club’s
leader and the show’s Director, the premiere performance of
‘Sleeping Beauty’ was successfully shown in the
school hall in July 2004. The following year ‘The Trouble in
the Wood’ was written. Due to mass drop out of cast members a
rapid re-think was needed as time was running out to curtain-up, and so
’The Story of the Willow Pattern’ was written and
performed that summer. As Jennifer’s job situation changed,
commitment to running the drama club had to give way and it
wasn’t until 2008 that she was able to devote more attention
to starting up the drama club again. By 2007, she was now working
officially at the school, along with spending more time volunteering in
the Foundation Stage. From this experience, she turned her hand to
writing a Christmas play for the Foundation Stage children to perform
that was adapted from a storybook. As the Spring Term approached, so
did the Science Co-ordinator, and as a result a short assembly play
called ‘Lost Forests’ was written for the
Foundation Stage to perform. Unfortunately time constraints prevented
fitting rehearsals into the timetable and so it remains, still waiting
to be performed
With the onset of 2008 Jennifer was now studying for an NVQ3 in
Childcare, Learning and Development. Along with her doing her usual
jobs and volunteering she still found time to write and run the drama
club again. Hence by July 2008, the club was ready to perform
Jennifer’s latest offering, ‘Beauty and the
Beast’. In 2009, ‘Aladdin’ was the latest
of Jennifer’s writings to make it to the school stage. Many
ideas still bubble around in her head. Among them are snatches of ideas
involving Saxons, Angles and Vikings; Beowulf, and Treasure Island; a
circus, and a movie studio; nursery criminals, three pigs, and
archaeology. At present the lightning bolt of inspiration
hasn’t hit again, yet, but she’s always on the
lookout. In the meantime, she has just published a new
version of Sleeping Beauty, and is continuing the writing of
‘Marvin
and the Monster’, the other pantomime she has on the back
burner.
Currently, when she’s not writing or otherwise occupied,
Jennifer works part-time as a Nanny, part-time as a TA, and part-time
as a Midday Meal Supervisor. She is also currently waiting to embark on
a Foundation Degree in the Early Years which makes up the next leg on
her road to becoming a fully qualified teacher herself.
